The "white gaze" was something I had to be liberated from. At a young age, I was "called" out by white people. Funny and startling, that I actually related it to being called out by God. In my mind at 13, most white people were those that I thought were always rich, smart... better. Being praised, not honored, by them caused me to feel a level of importance that made me seek out more of it.
